In recent years under mount sinks for kitchen and lavatory, and sometimes even
for laundry become more and more popular. Designers try to add something new to the
interior, use a bit different product. But are those sinks are more reliable?
Under mount sink is glued to the countertop from under the countertop, when
traditional sink is positioned above countertop, and its weight is supported by countertop.
Under mount sink just hangs in the air. Therefore, we quite often see that under mount
sink separates from countertop, gets unglued… Sometimes people put some heavy pots
with water into that sink – and it separates, falls down…
Also some people put silicone inside of under mount sink at the perimeter where
sink connects to countertop. Over the years that silicone develops mold, have that black
spots, discolouration.

Traditional above countertop sink has none of those problems.
Also if under mount sink is installed instead of traditional one, it may be
necessary to change drain layout for the sink. Under mount sink is installed a bit more
“deep”, so it is necessary to rearrange drain to achieve proper drain elevation, proper
drainage…
It is much harder to install under mount sink. Sometimes sophisticated fasteners
have to be used, especially if this is a heavy cast iron sink. First sink is glued under
countertop. Then, in 1-2 days it is necessary to come back to install basket strainers,
connect faucet and drain. Therefore, installation is much more expensive than
installation of traditional sink.
Keep those facts in mind when choosing your sink!
